He was the program's Executive Director for 45 years. Wolfe was especially active in basketball and slow pitch softball. As a board member of the Jewish Community Center, he took an active role in fundraising for the new building of the Jewish Community Center, opened in Beachwood in 1960. He and his wife Helen lived in Cleveland Heights for 45 years. | | | | Creator: | Berger, David | | | | Dates: | 1965-2006 | | | | Abstract: | David Berger (1944-1972), an American and Israeli citizen, was a champion weightlifter and a member of the Israeli weightlifting team at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany. He was murdered by Arab terrorists on September 6, 1972, along with ten other Israeli athletes. Berger was a 1962 graduate of Shaker Heights High School in Shaker Heights, Ohio. He studied psychology at Tulane University, graduating in 1966, after which he completed a master's degree in business administration and a law degree at Columbia University. Throughout the mid and late 1960s, Berger competed successfully in many weightlifting competitions. He represented the United States twice in the Maccabiah Games, an international Jewish athletic event held in Israel every four years. In 1965 he won a silver medal and in 1969 he won gold, setting a world record. He also won a silver medal at the 1971 Asian Games. He is in the Hall of Fame of the Amateur Athletic Union. Berger moved to Israel in 1970 after visiting the country with his family. Following graduation from the Chicago Art Institute in 1919, Wilk began his career at International Photos. He provided journalistic photography for the Chicago Tribune, the New York Times, the Cleveland Plain Dealer, and the Associated Press. Wilk went to work for the Chessie-B&O News in 1947 and stayed with the company until his retirement in 1965. Wilk covered major political conventions, sporting events, and numerous northeastern Ohio events, including the Great Lakes Exposition, the Cleveland Air Races, and the Cleveland Clinic disaster of 1929. The collection consists of autographs, a medallion, newspaper articles, photographs, postcards, tickets and two scrapbooks. In 1972, Moresky joined the Cleveland, Ohio NOW. By 1973 she was a member of the executive board and a state delegate, and, in 1974, Moresky became state NOW coordinator. In 1976 she was elected to a seat on the NOW national board. Moresky remained involved in NOW, particularly at the local level, throughout the 1980s, even as her political and women's rights activities increased and diversified. Her involvement included: Ohio Attorney General's Task Force on Sexism in Education, Cuyahoga County Democratic Executive Committee, Twenty-Second District Caucus chairperson, Democratic National Convention delegate, and Cleveland board member of Americans for Democratic Action. The collection includes personal files, consisting of resumes, calendars, correspondence, speeches and files re: fundraising and public relations; NOW files, consisting of local chapter files, Ohio NOW files, national NOW files, NOW ERA campaign files (hearings, press clippings and state campaign notebooks), and NOW publications; and, files pertaining to general women's issues, and events and organizations (such as abortion, day care, education, employment, International Women's Year, the Twenty-Second District Caucus, the Democratic National Conventions of 1980 and 1984). Three of his grandparents immigrated to the United States from counties Mayo, Carlow and Westmeath during the early twentieth century. They came to the United States in search of a better life, and to escape from the economic and political turmoiil present in Ireland at that time. Kilroy went to law school and represented the Padraig Pearce Center of the Irish American Club East Side, Inc. during its establishment. He was also active in the Cleveland Irish Players, a theatre group that was founded by Kevin McGinty and produces Irish plays by Irish playwrights. He was a regular contributor to the Ohio Irish Bulletin and other newsletters. Kilroy's interests also extend to Gaelic athletics and Irish current affairs, including the troubles in Northern Ireland. | | | | Creator: | Rose, William Ganson | | | | Dates: | 1862-1955 | | | | Abstract: | William Ganson Rose (1878-1957) was a noted Cleveland, Ohio, author, historian, lecturer, advertising executive, and civic promoter. In 1915, Rose formed Wm. G. Rose, Inc., his own advertising and public relations firm. He managed numerous fairs and expositions, including the first Cleveland Electrical Exposition (1914), the Gordon Bennett International Balloon Race and Aerial Carnival (1930), the Great Lakes Exposition (1936-1937), and the Cleveland Sesquicentennial (1946). In 1916-1917, Rose chaired the group which promoted and ultimately secured passage of a bond issue financing the construction of the Cleveland Public Auditorium. He served on the board of Hiram House, a Cleveland social settlement founded by George Bellamy in 1896, and belonged to the American Press Humorists and the Cleveland Athletic Club. Rose authored several books and numerous articles for newspapers and magazines, as well as a comprehensive history of Cleveland entitled Cleveland, the making of a city, published in 1950. Rose died in 1957. The collection consists of newspaper clippings, promotional material, correspondence, biographical material, photographs, reports, and historical material pertaining to the history of Cleveland, Ohio and many of its prominent citizens, but also including material on national and international events and personages. Individuals, organizations and events that figure most prominently include: the American Press Humorists, Newton D. Baker, George Bellamy and Hiram House, Charles F. Brush, the Cleveland Sesquicentennial of 1946, the visit to Cleveland of Emile Coue, Thomas A. Edison, the Gordon Bennett International Balloon Race and Aerial Carnival of 1930, Abraham Lincoln, the Cleveland Public Auditorium, John D. Rockefeller, the Cleveland War Service Center, the Cleveland Grays, and the writings of Whiting Williams. In 1972, Moresky joined the Cleveland, Ohio, NOW. By 1973 she was a member of the executive board and a state delegate, and, in 1974, Moresky became state NOW coordinator. In 1976 she was elected to a seat on the NOW national board. Moresky remained involved in NOW, particularly at the local level, throughout the 1980s, even as her political and women's rights activities increased and diversified. Her involvement included: Ohio Attorney General's Task Force on Sexism in Education, Cuyahoga County Democratic Executive Committee, Twenty-Second District Caucus chairperson, Democratic National Convention delegate, and Cleveland board member of Americans for Democratic Action. | | | | Creator: | Bellefaire | | | | Dates: | 1900-2003 | | | | Abstract: | Bellefaire, a residential treatment center for emotionally disturbed adolescents, is the oldest Jewish social-service agency in Cleveland, Ohio. It was dedicated on July 14, 1868 as the Jewish Orphan Asylum, established to care for Civil War orphans. By 1900, more than 400 orphans lived there. The name was changed to the Jewish Orphan Home (JOH) in 1919, and later to Bellefaire when its facilities moved to the corner of Belvoir and Fairmount Boulevards in 1929. In 1942 the orphanage changed its focus to include residential therapeutic care for emotionally disturbed children. It stopped accepting orphans in 1943. In 1954, Bellefaire opened its admissions to children of all faiths and today provides counseling, substance abuse treatment, foster care, adoption services, and residential treatment. Jack Girick, whose papers are included in this collection, was a resident of the Jewish Orphan Asylum from 1902 to 1912. While a resident, he served as a monitor, assisted the superintendent in conducting Sabbath religious services, and was elected president of the Literary Union and the Athletic Association of the Home. Girick was sent to Central High School, and then to Hebrew Union College to train for the rabbinate. In 1917 he left school and returned to the Jewish Orphan Home, where he became governor of the Home from 1917 to 1922 and then assistant superintendent from 1922 to 1938. He remained active in the Jewish Orphan Home Alumni Association until his death in 1988. The Jewish Orphan Home Alumni Association was established in 1888 to serve and connect the orphans who formerly lived at the Jewish Orphan Home. The Association held Homecomings each year in Cleveland and had several active chapters located throughout the country. "Graduates" of JOH were designated by the year of their confirmation class.
